I want a free consultation – how much protection does my car need?
No obligation

Buying a new BMW i4 is a significant investment. The car may still be on order, just delivered or already in daily use when the question comes up: how should its paint be protected against Finnish weather, stone chips and everyday wear?

Should you protect your BMW i4 with paint protection film (PPF), is a ceramic coating enough, or is a combination of both the most sensible solution?

PPF reduces damage from stone chips and light scratches on the protected areas. A ceramic coating, on the other hand, makes the car easier to keep clean and helps it keep a well-kept look.

Neither solution is automatically right for everyone. The right protection depends on how much you drive, what kind of roads you drive on, how long you plan to keep your car and what you want the protection to achieve.

In this guide we go through the most important areas to protect on a BMW i4, the different PPF packages, ceramic coating and the other options Restyling Point offers.

1. BMW i4 2026–2027 – what should you protect?

The BMW i4 is an all-electric Gran Coupé that combines sporty design with the practicality of a five-door car. The 2026 lineup includes rear-wheel and all-wheel drive versions with different power outputs, such as the eDrive40, xDrive40 and M60 xDrive.

From a protection point of view, these areas deserve special attention:

  • Front bumper: the wide front end is exposed to flying stones and other road wear on the highway.
  • Hood: a visible painted surface where stone chips can spoil the overall look of the car.
  • Front fenders and side mirrors: can be hit by stones, sand and other small debris while driving.
  • Rocker panels and lower door edges: these low surfaces take wear especially from sand, gravel and winter road grime.
  • Rear bumper loading area: handling luggage, strollers and other items can leave marks on the surface.
  • Inner door sills and high-gloss interior surfaces: daily contact from passengers and items can cause wear.

The BMW i4’s equipment matters. For example, body parts that come with the M Sport package, different trim strips and any carbon fiber parts can affect how suitable protective film is and how much work it takes.

That is why one universal order of parts to protect should not be applied to every i4 version.

2. PPF or ceramic coating for the BMW i4?

PPF, or paint protection film, is a clear or colored film that forms a physical protective layer on the car’s surface.

Its purpose is to reduce certain mechanical surface damage, such as stone chips and light scratches.

A ceramic coating, on the other hand, forms a thin protective layer on the paint, specific to each product. Its main benefits are water repellency, easier cleaning and keeping the paint looking well cared for.

Feature PPF Ceramic coating
Stone chip protection Yes, to a limited extent No
Light scratch protection Depends on the product Not real scratch protection
Easier washing Depends on the product Yes
Water repellency Depends on the product Yes
Keeping the car looking good Reduces mechanical marks Makes cleaning easier
Where it is used Selected areas or the whole exterior Suitable surfaces that can be treated

For many BMW i4 owners, a sensible option is a combination where the key front-end areas are protected with PPF and the other painted surfaces are treated with a ceramic coating.

This way physical protection goes where it brings the most benefit, while the rest of the car becomes easier to maintain.

Basic PPF – protects the everyday wear areas

€479

Best for: daily city and everyday driving.

Basic protects the low-lying painted surfaces that take wear from the road and from everyday use.

The basic package includes the two rocker panels, the lower edges of the four doors, the lower edges of the front fenders and the rear bumper corners. The parts that suit the actual body of the BMW i4 are confirmed before ordering.

Basic can give the owner peace of mind in normal everyday use without a large investment in PPF.

It does not, however, include the front bumper or the hood.

Core PPF – protects the front bumper and hood

€1,029

Best for: highway driving and front-end protection on a limited budget.

The Core package includes the front bumper and the hood.

These are key areas that take direct wear, especially on highways and country roads.

If you drive your BMW i4 a lot, for example between Helsinki, Tampere and Turku, protecting the front end can make a real difference in keeping the paint in good condition.

Core protects two visible areas and can reduce worry about marks on them.

The front fenders, headlights, side mirrors and rocker panels, for example, are not included in the package.

Essential PPF – wider front-end protection

€1,699

Best for: active year-round highway driving.

Besides the front bumper and the hood, Essential extends the protection to the front fenders, suitable front-end details, and the headlights and front parts of the side mirrors, when putting film on them is allowed and technically suitable.

The basic package also includes the lower diffuser of the front bumper, any wheel arch trims and separate fog lights. These are not assumed to be on the BMW i4 automatically.

The purpose of Essential is to protect the front end as a whole, not just individual large painted surfaces.

It can reduce the worry that comes with highway driving and suits owners who want their car to look good even after several driving seasons.

The rocker panels and lower door edges are not part of the Essential package.

Advanced PPF – front end and lower parts combined

€2,099

Best for: owners who drive a lot and want to protect the most important areas.

Advanced combines the contents of the Essential and Basic packages.

Besides the key front-end areas, the protection covers the rocker panels, the lower door edges and other defined low-lying wear areas.

This is a solution worth considering, for example, for an i4 owner who drives 20,000–40,000 kilometers a year and uses the car in all seasons.

The practical benefit of the package is that the protection needs of both the front end and the lower parts are taken care of at the same time.

Advanced does not, however, protect the full outer surfaces of the doors or all painted surfaces at the rear of the car.

Green BMW i4, front three-quarter view

Ultimate PPF – protection for the whole exterior

€4,799 Gloss

€4,990 Matte or Satin

Best for: long-term ownership and the widest possible surface protection.

Ultimate is Restyling Point’s most complete PPF package and gives the customer the greatest peace of mind.

It covers the agreed body-color exterior surfaces and separately defined parts that are suitable for film. These include, for example, the front bumper, hood, fenders, doors, side mirrors, rocker panels, trunk lid and rear bumper.

A suitable painted roof, spoilers and other details are also covered according to the package description. Any glass roofs, the interior, door jambs and unsuitable trim parts are not automatically included.

Ultimate Gloss keeps the glossy look of the surface, while Ultimate Matte gives the car a matte look with a suitable protective film.

The main benefit of this package is the most complete peace of mind possible. When the large exterior surfaces of the car are protected, the owner can take everyday situations more calmly.

No PPF, however, prevents all damage, such as deep impacts or dents.

Interior PPF – protects the interior touch surfaces

The BMW i4’s interior has the BMW Curved Display screen unit and high-gloss surfaces that depend on the equipment.

Films made for the purpose can be used to protect them, as long as the compatibility of the materials and how they work have been confirmed.

4. Add-on protection for the BMW i4 – small details with practical benefits

Besides a wide package, individual areas that are especially exposed can be protected.

Add-on protection Reference price
Hood €549
Front bumper €699
Front edge of the roof €129
Headlight €79 each
B/C pillar €49 each
Screen protector €79 each
Loading area protection €89 each
Inner door sill €89 each

On the BMW i4, for example, the inner door sills and the rear bumper loading area are interesting areas for add-on protection.

If the car is used by a family or regularly carries luggage and sports gear, protecting them can make much more sense than putting film on a trim part that takes little wear.

One critically important add-on we recommend is the vertical window pillars on the B/C pillars.

5. Ceramic coating and detailing for the BMW i4

A ceramic coating is an interesting option when the owner wants to keep the paint glossy and make daily upkeep easier without wide PPF protection.

Washing and machine polishing

Before the coating, the car is cleaned carefully and the condition of the paint is inspected.

Even a new BMW i4 can have surface marks from transport, storage or washes. How many there are and what kind varies from car to car.

If needed, the car is machine polished to make light wash scratches and other surface defects less visible.

The purpose of the right prep work is to prepare the surface for the coating and make sure the result looks well finished. A new car does not automatically need extensive multi-step polishing.

Ceramic coating for the paint

A ceramic coating makes the paint more water-repellent and helps dirt come off when washing.

For a BMW i4 owner, this means easier car care in practice and satisfaction with the car’s glossy, well-kept look.

The coating does not, however, remove the need to wash or give mechanical stone chip protection like PPF does.

Ceramic coating for the wheels

Coating the wheels can make it easier to clean off brake dust and other dirt.

This is useful especially when the car has a complex wheel design that is hard to clean.

The coating does not protect the wheels against curb damage.

Leather and interior coating

The BMW i4’s upholstery materials depend on the car’s equipment. The interior can have leather, synthetic leather and other surfaces that need different cleaning and protection methods.

A suitable coating can make the interior materials easier to keep clean. Before the treatment, the compatibility of the material and the product is confirmed.

Ceramic coating for the glass

A glass coating can help water run off the glass and reduce how much dirt sticks to it.

It does not repair stone chips in the glass, nor does it replace the wipers or normal cleaning of the glass.

6. Window tinting for the BMW i4

Tinting the windows of a BMW i4 can add privacy for passengers, change the look of the car and help control sunlight.

When choosing a film, it is important to look at more than how dark it is. Heat and UV protection depend on the product used.

The structure of the rear window, any defroster lines and other details specific to each window are taken into account before installation.

Current Finnish road traffic regulations limit especially what film can be added afterwards to the windshield and the front side windows.

The right package is assessed car by car, so the result is both practical and compliant with the regulations.

7. Chrome delete and wrapping individual parts on the BMW i4

The look of the BMW i4 can be personalized without changing the color of the whole car.

For example, wrapping the side mirrors, trim strips and other suitable parts can change the overall look of the car.

Chrome delete usually means changing bright trim parts, for example to black, by wrapping them.

When wrapping the roof, it has to be taken into account whether it is a painted surface, a glass roof or some other structure.

A cosmetic wrap does not automatically offer the same mechanical protection as PPF, so the solution is chosen based on the main goal.

8. Changing the color of the whole BMW i4 – vinyl or colored PPF?

The color of the whole car can be changed, for example, with traditional vinyl wrap or with colored PPF.

Vinyl wrapping is first and foremost for changing the look. It makes many different colors and finishes possible.

Colored PPF combines a new look with the mechanical surface protection of the product.

The solutions differ in materials, protective properties, pricing and upkeep.

If the goal is only a change of look, traditional vinyl wrap can be the right choice.

If the customer wants both a new color and mechanical surface protection, it is worth comparing colored PPF options.

9. Which protection package suits a BMW i4 owner?

A new BMW i4 for city driving

If you drive mainly in the city and value easy upkeep, a ceramic coating and carefully chosen PPF add-ons can be a sensible combination.

A BMW i4 for lots of highway driving

If you drive a lot, Essential can give you the right front-end protection. Advanced adds protection for the low-lying wear areas.

A BMW i4 for long-term ownership

If you plan to keep the car for at least 4–5 years and want the most complete surface protection possible, Ultimate is an option worth considering.

A leased BMW i4

If what matters most is a sharp look and easy care while you use the car, a ceramic coating may be enough. The return terms of the lease still need to be taken into account separately.

10. Why protect your BMW i4 at Restyling Point?

In PPF protection, a good result does not come from the right film alone.

Inspecting the car’s surfaces, careful prep, fitting the film, finishing the edges and checking the quality are all key steps of the work.

Restyling Point’s goal is to recommend the right package for the customer, not automatically the widest one.

If a surface is not suitable for safe film installation, or a certain add-on would not bring the customer a real benefit, we say so before you decide.

We also go through aftercare and the warranty terms. A warranty on the installation does not mean that the film prevents all external damage.

The most important result for the customer is understanding what will be done to the car and being able to trust that the agreed work will be done right.

11. Frequently asked questions

Should you protect a BMW i4 with PPF right away, while it is new?

If the goal is to reduce the first stone chips and mechanical surface marks, protection is worth planning before the car is delivered or soon after.

Which PPF package suits the BMW i4 best?

It depends on how you use the car. Essential is an interesting option for highway driving, Advanced for wider protection of the front end and lower parts, and Ultimate for those who want the most complete exterior protection.

Is a ceramic coating enough for a BMW i4?

Yes, if what matters most is easier washing and a well-kept look and you do not need real mechanical stone chip protection.

Can a ceramic coating be applied on top of PPF?

Yes, as long as the coating used is compatible with the film and the material manufacturer’s instructions are followed during application.

How long does PPF last on a BMW i4?

At least 10 years in Finland.

Can PPF be removed later?

PPF can usually be removed by a professional, but the condition of the paint, any earlier repaints and the removal method affect the risks.

Does PPF preserve the resale value of a BMW i4?

PPF can help keep the protected painted surfaces in better cosmetic condition, which can be an advantage when the car is sold later. A specific increase in resale price cannot, however, be guaranteed.

When should you book protection for a BMW i4?

It is worth starting to plan as early as when you order the car. That way the level of protection can be chosen without rushing and the installation can be timed to fit the delivery of the car.

12. Choose protection for your BMW i4 based on how you use it

When protecting a BMW i4, you do not need to start with the biggest package.

If the goal is to reduce stone chips at the front, Core or Essential can be a good starting point.

If you also want to take care of wear on the lower parts, it is worth comparing the Advanced package.

And if you want the most complete agreed exterior protection and long-term peace of mind, Ultimate offers the widest solution.

A ceramic coating complements PPF when the goal is also easy care, water repellency and a well-kept look.
