Winter is a challenging time for cars and vehicles. Cars get dirty, and paint surfaces suffer during the winter. In this blog, we’ll go through everything you should know before the onset of winter and how you can prevent your car’s paint surface from wearing out.

Winter Four-Wheel Drive

Snow Brush: the eternal enemy of paint surfaces. The law dictates that snow must be completely removed from the car’s surface. Leaving snow on the surface poses a significant safety risk, and this should not be underestimated. There are, of course, a few safe ways to remove snow.

We recommend using a silicone snow brush. This silicone brush is much safer for the paint surface than the traditional, cheaper snow brush made of hard plastic.

When using the brush, do not press it through the snow layer onto the paint surface. Safely remove the snow from the surface without rubbing. If there is ice on the surface, leave it there and let it melt as your car warms up. On a coated car, the excess snow and ice will slide off more smoothly. Under no circumstances should you scrape the ice off the paint surface unless you want to damage it.

A leaf blower/air compressor can also be used to remove snow. If there is only powdery snow on the paint surface, it can be removed with a leaf blower. In this case, there is no need to touch the car’s paint surface at all.

It is very sensible to drive the car into a warm parking garage during shopping trips. The snow will melt away during that time.

Ceramic Coating

Ceramic Coating

The car’s paint surface should be protected before the slushy weather arrives. The easiest and most cost-effective way to do this is with Ceramic Coating. Ceramic coating helps your car stay clean and prevents dirt from adhering easily to surfaces. The surface also maintains a different kind of shine compared to an unpainted car. Washing the car in winter to remove salt and other dirt is effortless. With the right cleaning agents and careful washing, the car cleans easily. However, it is important to remember that, for example, road salt/bitumen can only be removed with a solvent-based tar remover.

Ceramic coating can also be used to protect the wheels, door gaps, and windows.

When coating the wheels, they no longer collect dirt in the same way as without the coating. They stay cleaner and shinier throughout the winter. However, washing the wheels is not the easiest task.

Window coatings enhance driving safety. When water and snow effortlessly bead off the windows, visibility improves.

On the windshield, all dirt and water are removed in droplets when the car’s speed exceeds 40km/h.

Before applying ceramic coating, a used car must be polished to remove scratches. This helps enhance the durability of the ceramic coating and fulfills warranty requirements. It’s advisable to protect a new car as soon as you drive it off the lot. This way, you’ll avoid potential additional polishing costs.

PPF

Another option for protecting your car is PPF film (Transparent paint protection film). By protecting the most vulnerable areas, you can avoid unpleasant damages that ice on the road can cause, such as to your car’s sills. PPF can withstand significant stress and, when properly installed, can last for many winters. PPF is a valuable material, so it’s considerably more expensive compared to ceramic coating. PPF can withstand physical impacts and stone chips without letting them reach the paint surface, whereas ceramic coating cannot. You can learn more about the differences between PPF and ceramic coating here.

The car’s sills, front bumper, headlights, mirrors, and rear bumper corners are the areas that receive the most hits during winter. Ice chunks, flying studs, and slush wear down these areas. By protecting these areas with PPF film and coating the entire car, you provide the best protection for your car.

– Protect vulnerable areas with PPF film

Wheel Coating

During winter, a lot of snow accumulates inside the wheels. Also, in the wheel arches, sometimes even so much that the tires can’t rotate.

Snow in the wheels, Wheel Coating

This is where wheel coating comes in handy. When wheel coating is installed at Restyling Point, the same substance is sprayed onto the brake calipers, inside the wheels, and of course, in the wheel arches. This helps facilitate snow removal in winter.

Accumulated snow causes unstable vibrations while driving.

In the above photograph, wheel coating is applied on the inside of the wheel, but not on the arches. The area with the coating is free of ice and snow, while the area without the coating has caused extra friction and weight on the vehicle.
