The Tesla Model Y is a so-called elevated version of the Tesla Model 3.
This model’s popularity has been increasing, and many Model 3 owners have switched to the larger Model Y model.
The Y has similar sensitive parts as its predecessor, the Model 3.
In the recent Model Y model, there are no painted lower sills; instead, the car is surrounded by a matte black textured plastic trim. Since these parts can only be protected with ceramic coating, applying paint protection film is more cost-effective for the Model Y model.
Door Lower Edges
In the TMY (Tesla Model Y), instead, there is one equally sensitive area: the lower edges of the doors. Their structural shape and angle are oriented downward, facing the gravel spray from under the tires. Based on our experience, this area is primarily vulnerable.
In the new TMY models, factory PPF pieces have been installed in the corners of the rear doors, but unfortunately, due to their size, they are not sufficient to protect the entire lower side of the car lengthwise. Package 1 of the paint protection package includes not only the lower edges of the doors but also the front headlights and fog lights because they are extremely vulnerable to rocks coming from the front.
The new car in the photograph had a mileage of 37 km, and it was delivered brand new the previous day with 1 km on the odometer. At the time of delivery, the manufacturer had installed a protective pad. Beneath the protective pad revealed a mystery.
Front of the Car
The front end of cars is one of the most vulnerable areas, subject to the worst possible daily damage from vehicles driving ahead. Rocks and studs can penetrate the paint layer, leaving visible marks on the bodywork.
The full front-end protection package includes the hood, front bumper, front fenders, headlights, fog lights, and side mirrors.
We are often asked which is more vulnerable, the front bumper or the hood. Both are equally susceptible to stone chips, each with its sensitive characteristics.
The hood is in a shallower condition, and stone chips don’t cause as much damage as they do to the front bumper. However, despite its shallow angle, the hood is positioned higher compared to the front bumper, closer to eye level. Therefore, even minor damages are highly noticeable.
The Tesla’s front bumper is positioned lower, farther from eye level, but its angle is nearly vertical, which tends to collect all flying debris. In parking situations, the front bumper is susceptible to scrapes and scratches in tight spaces. In other words, both the front bumper and the hood equally display even the smallest damages.
On the other hand, the front fenders are the area where you might trim your budget. However, the area next to the headlight on the front fenders faces forward just as prominently as the hood, and the biggest stone chips tend to occur precisely in this area.
Interior Sills and Cargo Area Protector
Visible scratches from shoes are common on interior sills in every car brand, and Tesla is no exception. Especially, the black trim with the TESLA text in the front endures visible damage when shoes come into contact with it. Additionally, the paint surface of the door’s inner sill frame is prone to scratching. In this video, you can see how a knife scratches the paint surface and how PPF protects it.
The protection also includes black trim protection on the inner sills of the front door.
In the rear doors, the smallest passengers often use the inner sill as a step when climbing into the car. That’s why the rear sill is heavily protected.
The upper edge of the rear bumper is a vulnerable area in all cars, and it often gets scratched when loading items such as strollers, golf bags, larger bags, etc., into the car.
Model Y Paint Surface
The paint surface of Teslas is just as susceptible as in other car models. Depending on the annual mileage and how long the car will be kept, it’s worth considering a suitable protection solution according to your criteria.
For example, you can find useful tips in the new car protection guide.
Tesla Model Y protection solutions in order of popularity:
- PPF: hood + door lower edges + interior sills + touchscreen + ceramic coating for the rest of the car. This has been the most popular package.
- Full car protection with Gloss or Matte PPF film. Project Example: Matte PPF Tesla Model Y
Below is an example of a white Model Y with transparent Matte PPF installed.

- Full car PPF wrapping with chameleon PPF film
- Full car wrap with colored vinyl
- Ceramic coating for the entire car
Interior
The interior of the Model Y has been extensively wrapped because not everyone likes the wood pattern. For example, Satin Black wrap has perfectly matched the interior with dark seats.
For white interiors, Satin White wrap is the best fit.
A highly effective protection for leather interiors has been proven to be leather coating, the effectiveness of which can be found in the example video.
